Leak: Globe to offer 50Mbps unlimited broadband for Php2,499

$

0

In a leaked document that we acquired just now, it looks like Globe Telecom is set to upgrade it Platinum Broadband Plans to higher bandwidth. The documents point to a 50Mbps unlimited connection for only Php2,499 while a 100Mbps line will be priced at Php3,499.

The Platinum Home Broadband is Globe’s fiber internet service that covers selected high-end subdivisions and condominiums (check all the areas covered with this plan here).

These are very fast yet affordable broadband that could rival neighboring countries. Although the serviceable areas are still limited due to limitations of technology and infrastructure, the list should expand in more areas and subdivisions as roll-out of fiber lines are being done.

Our source indicates the new Platinum Plans will become effective on October 24, 2015 (this is also the date stated in the documents we got).

Local Internet Service Providers have recently been the target of criticisms and even Senate investigation regarding the slow state of internet in the Philippines. This move could be Globe’s effort to address the concern and while the new upgraded speeds only covers those areas with fiber connection, we should see more and more subscribers being able to upgrade to these speeds soon.

P.S. Coincidentally, my condo is included in this list so we will try to subscribe to the 100Mbps plan and check the performance.

Expect 1Gbps fiber-to-home from Globe for Php9,499 this November

Globe also plans to offer 1Gbps fiber to home connection this November 2015, according to leaked documents we obtained earlier. This is part of the Platinum Home Broadband Plan that Globe is offering to select villages and condominiums.

The historical chart above shows the initial speed offering for fiber when Globe started rolling it out in 2014. It also shows how the speeds are increasing and the monthly service fees are decreasing.

According to the same documents that we got, Platinum Home Broadband Plans will start at 50Mbps for Php2,499 (see story here).

There’s also a 200Mbps plan for Php4,499 and a 500Mbps line for Php7,499 if you think 1Gbps is too much for your needs.

Take note those that the 1Gbps fiber connections are currently offered in limited areas (see complete list here).

Globe poster confirms 50Mbps Platinum Broadband Plans

$

0

A poster given to one of the existing Globe Platinum Home Broadband confirms our earlier information about Globe’s planned upgrade of the 50Mbps fiber line to just Php2,499. The poster below showed a discounted 50Mbps line to Php2,499 from Php4,999 for the first 12 months with a 24-month lock-in.

The one that is planned for October 24 as stated in the leaked documents we acquired looks like it will be a permanent upgrade to all new and existing Platinum subscribers.

Yesterday, we reported that the starting plan for fiber connection will be 50Mbps for a monthly subscription fee of Php2,499 and goes all the way up to 1Gbps for Php9,499 (November availability).

The poster also indicated a 5Mbps minimum speed at 80% reliability.

This move is likely Globe’s response to the ranking reports of broadband speeds in Asia. We also note that only selected areas are affected by this increase due to the limited availability of their fiber network that has the capacity to deliver up to 1Gbps. Older lines that still run on copper wires will remain with the old subscription plans.

PLDT Home Ultera shifts to new monthly caps with auto-disconnection

PLDT has silently implemented new monthly caps for its Home Ultera plans, now with bigger monthly usage allowances but with auto-disconnection once you use it up.

PLDT Home Ultera now has the following monthly usage allowances:

pldt ultera 2015_1

The new allowances look good especially if you’re a heavy user but here’s the catch – you will be automatically temporarily disconnected once you use up your data allowance, unlike before when the ISP will just slow down your internet speed.

PLDT mentions that you can still connect to the internet by purchasing Volume Boosters that “will be added on top of your monthly volume allowance and reflected on your next billing statement.” Take a look at the table below:

Do note that you can only purchase a total of Php500 worth of Volume Boosters per month. However, unlike the monthly data allowances, unused Volume Boosters will be carried over to the next month.

With PLDt and Globe finally announcing the availability of fiber internet up to 1Gbps, it will only be a matter of time that more and more locations will be covered by the fiber roll-out.

Globe Platinum offers between 50Mbps to 1Gbps while PLDT Fiber has a Lite version at 8Mbps then starts fiber at 20Mbps right up to 1Gbps. Globe has already announced that the 1Gbps line costs Php9,499 a month while PLDT has not yet made any confirmation (Our source says it’s also around Php10,000).

PLDT offers free access to Cignal, iFlix and Fox content while Globe offers free Spotify, NBA and access to Hooq.

At the moment, Globe’s fiber plans are much more affordable compared to PLDT with the 50Mbps only at Php2,499 compared to PLDT’s Php5,800 for the same speed. PLDT’s 200Mbps is currently at Php20,000 but Globe is offering the same 200Mbps for only Php4,499.

Currently, only around 80 villages and condominiums have the fiber line (see full list here).

This excitement over Telstra might end up as a huge disappointment

$
0
0

In the last several weeks, there has been a lot of noise and positive online sentiment with Telstra’s intention to enter the Philippine mobile internet market as challenger to the duopoly of Smart and Globe.

The plan to launch in the Philippines sometime in 2016 is not yet firm but talks with San Miguel Corporation as the local partner in the joint venture has been ongoing as early as August. However, top brass of Telstra has been quoted that the Australian giant is willing to shell out as much as $1 billion to represent its 40% investment in the joint venture (by law, foreign corporations are only allowed a maximum of 40% ownership in select industries such as telecoms).

The overflowing excitement and support for Telstra is expected as many internet subscribers in the Philippines are dissatisfied with the current level of service and support they are getting from existing providers.

However, very little detail is available as to how Telstra is going to penetrate and compete against the two dominant players. Our best guess is that their service will most likely be thru a wireless network using existing LTE technology. This is the fastest and more cost-effective way to roll-out a national broadband network in the country, considering the archipelagic nature of the Philippines.

We then also consider the track record of San Miguel which funded the establishment of Wi-Tribe back in 2007 in partnership with Q-Tel. That venture was did not quite pan out and they’ve been under rehabilitation for some time now.

Our hope is that Telstra’s venture with San Miguel Corporation will learn from the challenges of Wi-Tribe and the deficiencies of WiMax technology.

Do not expect this new ISP to offer wired broadband connection or fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) in the Philippines. The infrastructure and roll-out for that takes much longer and costlier. Do not expect gigabit-level speeds as well. Let us moderate our expectations.

Telstra or even San Miguel for that matter does not have a stand-alone infrastructure in the country. If they were quietly building one, we would have heard about it and it would have been started many years ago.

The San Miguel – Ooredoo joint venture on Liberty Telecoms will continue to operate Wi-Tribe after it exits rehabilitation. That could mean the home broadband services will continue to be offered via Wi-Tribe’s WiMax technology.

What Telstra brings to the table with the joint venture with San Miguel is the international gateway (submarine cables). One of which is the EAC-C2C (Pacnet, acquired by Telstra in April 2015) which lands in Cavite and Batangas, that goes all the way from Singapore up to Japan. It also co-owns APCN-2 with Singtel, Verizon, AT&T and many others which has a landing base in Batangas.

The fibre optic subsea cable network spans 36,800 km between Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, the Philippines, Singapore and China. It has a design capacity of 17.92 Tbit/s to 30.72 Tbit/s to each of these landing countries. The EAC-C2C network lands at 18 cable landing stations across Asia.

That way Telstra/San Miguel will not have to buy or lease international bandwidth from PLDT.

What San Miguel is bringing to the table is its experience (with Wi-Tribe) and of course, the 60% equivalent investment of the joint venture.

The second challenge is to build the domestic network all the way from as far as Vigan down to Naga and then connect that Batangas landing base to Palawan, Panay, Negros and Cebu and still move further down in Cagayan de Oro to Davao and Zamboanga.

That’s a pretty long fiber network. One of the longest domestic network we know of was rolled out by PLDT is the DFON (PLDT Domestic Fiber Optic Network) which spans 11,100km from Batangas to Mindoro, then Roxas to Masbate and back to Legazpi. The other is from Negros to Cebu and Leyte then down to Butuan, Cagayan de Oro and Ozamis that goes back up to Dumaguete.

Our best bet is nomadic data services and fixed wireless connection just like SmartBro or PLDT Ultera. San Miguel already owns Bell Telecommunications which applied as a mobile network operator (MNO) for January 2016. It’s possible Telstra’s investment will be poured into BellTel.

Bandwidth for wireless connectivity is very limited so it is easily congested. It is also prone to more external factors or interferences. We’ve already experienced really fast LTE speeds up to 42Mbps during its first few months back then but those speeds are almost non-existent nowadays.

Perhaps, if Telstra and San Miguel put up better infrastructure and wider coverage at cheaper fees and much higher bandwidth allocations it will surely eat up a sizable share of the market right away.

Looking at Telstra’s mobile data plans in Australia, one can only hope that their $AUD25 (Php835) a month plan for 1GB or $AUD105 (Php3,500) for 15GB data allocation will not be replicated in the Philippines. Telstra would probably price it better than that to be competitive once they launch here.

Otherwise, all these positive sentiment will only be dampened by disappointment and frustration that many Filipino internet users have been experiencing for a long time.

There is huge expectations for a yet-to-be established carrier. It could all backfire once these alleged super fast, super cheap, un-capped and unlimited data services become available to consumers.

It’s unfair for Telstra to take on this big burden — something that they did not even promise in the first place. Otherwise, they will end up being labeled as another incompetent or greedy corporation.

In any case, we welcome competition. It is good for the market and good for consumers. We remain positive and hopeful that we will really get the service we deserve, whether it’s from existing local players or new ones.

The bottom line:

* The Telstra – San Miguel joint venture is still under negotiations so a 2016 launch is still unlikely.
* The partnership is more about San Miguel which will own 60% rather than Telstra that will only own 40%.
* The joint venture will mostly be mobile data services (LTE) and not ADSL, Fiber or even cable.
* The 4th mobile network operator (MNO) could be BellTel to compete with Smart, Globe and Sun Cellular.
* Any new competitor will likely bring prices down which is always good for customers

Why Smart had to kill Unlisurf Packages in favor of Surf Max

$
0
0

Starting this month, Smart is shifting it’s mobile data services from UnliSurf to SurfMax for postpaid, prepaid and SmartBro subscribers. The new offer starts October 31, 2015 to April 30, 2016 for prepaid and SmartBro subscribers and November, 2015 to April 30, 2016 for postpaid users.

Smart has followed in the same footsteps at Globe’s GoSurf which was introduced back in May 2014.

Back in November 2014, we also reported that Smart has also removed their UnliData Plans in favor of capped Data Plans (see here).

So the question is, why is Smart shifting from an already successful and well-subscribed mobile data services (UnliSurf) to the new strategy which is SurfMax? The answer is hinted in this FAQ on the SurfMax page:

What are the features of this product?
Smart SurfMax allows subscribers to enjoy all day surfing up to 800MB/day at optimal speeds. Once this is consumed, all day surfing services will still be active but connection quality may vary until 12 midnight.

To help subscribers better manage their daily usage, this service will send them free text alerts once daily usage reaches 640MB (80%) and 800MB (100%).

Upon reaching their Smart SurfMax daily limit, subscribers may also switch to any Smart Big Bytes offering to continue enjoying optimal speeds. They may do so by texting BIG to 9999 (Example: BIG50 to 9999). For a complete list of Smart Big Bytes packages, they may also visit www.smart.com.ph/pages/bigbytes.

Technically SurfMax is not exactly capped. It’s throttled. This means that once you hit the 800MB allocation, we are still able to connect to the internet for the entire 24 hours of the subscription. Theoretically, your maximum potential data allocation is 800MB + (135kbps Edge speed x 24 hours) = 800MB + 1,458MB = 2.258GB per day.

For the monthly (30 days) subscribers, that’s 24GB of optimal speeds plus 43.74GB of sub-optimal speeds.

Smart’s decision to set the daily limit at 800MB is to ensure that mobile data users would not switch to Globe which already has an 800MB limit for prepaid users for many years.

If a subscribers want to download more than 800MB of data in a single day at optimal speeds, they are allowed to subscribe to Smart’s Big Bytes plan which offers an additional 18GB of consumable data for Php2,500.

To go around this, we suggest subscribing to Big Byte Plan 299 SurfMax 995 + Anti-Bill Shock 999 for a monthly service fee of Php1,994 to bypass the capping.

It becomes pretty obvious that the switch from UnliSurf to SurfMax is a business move to upsell services to heavy data users. Smart’s parent company, PLDT, has had a slow year last year and almost negligible net profit this year (1% from recent investor reports). Hence, one of the potentially huge channel for revenue growth is in mobile data. Looks like PLDT/Smart is learning from Globe’s strategy that it has already put in place for a couple of years which is why they’re posting double-digit growth (14%) since last year.

Can the Philippines really get to 1Gbps home internet?

Back in 2001, an unlimited 56Kbps dial-up connection costs Php5,500 a month. In 2004, an unlimited 128Kbps fixed wireless internet from Meredian Telekoms (later bought out by Smart to become Smartbro) costs Php8,888 a month.

In the year 2015, is it possible to get 1Gbps to the home for under Php10,000?

1Gbps fiber connection tested at one of the home of a PLDT Fibr’s subscriber. We saw speeds of hitting 877Mbps and higher. Over the course of the afternoon, around 500GB of data were downloaded in this connection by various media and bloggers who attended.

That is the question that is being addressed by PLDT when they invited us last Friday in one of the homes along Mckinley Road.

So yes, it is possible if you happen to live in any one of the 1,700 barangays, villages, subdivisions and condominiums in Metro Manila, Cebu, Davao and many other cities around the country.

Most of these locations are new fiber roll-outs while a few are upgrades to existing copper lines. These 1,700 locations might not be enough to cover majority of subscribers but it’s a start.

It was the same problem when ISPs where upgrading from dial-up to DSL which took years to complete.

While 1Gbps might be too much for many subscribers, there are still slower subscriptions plans that only offer 50Mbps, 100Mbps and 200Mbps that starts at Php2,899.

The second question is — when we the rest of us get to those fiber speeds? We hope it won’t be as long as the transition from dial-up to DSL. To check if your area is covered, just go to the PLDT Fibr website and do a search of your location.

For the meantime, we can only drool in jealousy on those who are already covered in gigabit fiber.
